Classic
They see mom pull up to the intersection in a classic 50s car. They do not like her because she looks happy. This is taken for smugness.
“What makes a classic a classic, anyway?” they asked, whilst thinking, “I wonder how many thousands of dollars that's worth?” They muttered to one another as they walked off. So they don't look like they're bothered. When she’d gotten into the car she had distinctly smelt the tang of semen and weighed up the possibilities : 1. The eldest son, the owner, had had sex with his wife in the car. 2. The younger son had borrowed the car and he'd had sex with his girlfriend. 3. The smell was a recollection of nights she'd spent in the backs of cars like this one. 4. The smell was coming from somewhere else. Or 5. The smell was something else. As she pulls away at the lights she sees people from the neighbourhood. They don't look happy. The lights change. Moving again, something in her head asks, “What does make a classic a classic?” She replies to her head without saying a word, “Something that stands the test of time.” |
